While the highly technical measurement techniques and methodologies of Value at Risk have attracted huge interest, much less attention has been focused on how Value at Risk and the risk-adjusted performance measures such as RAROC or economic profit/EVA„· can be effectively used to improve a bank¡¦s decision making processes. Academic books are typically concerned primarily with measurement techniques, and devote only a small section to describing the applications, usually without discussing the problems that changing organizational processes in banks may have on business units¡¦ behaviour. Practitioners¡¦ books are often based on a single experience, presenting the approach that has been pursued by a single bank, but often do not adequately evaluate that approach. In actual practice, the choice of how to use Value at Risk and risk-adjusted performance measures has no single optimal solution, but requires effective decision making that can identify the solution that is consistent with the bank¡¦s style of management and coordination mechanisms, and often with characteristics of individual business units as well. In this book, Francesco Saita of Bocconi University argues that even though risk measurement techniques have greatly improved in recent years for market, credit and now also operational risk, capital management and capital allocation decisions are far from becoming purely technical and mechanical. On one hand, decisions about capital management must consider handling different capital constraints (e.g. regulatory vs. economic capital ) and face remarkable difficulties in providing a measure of ¡§aggregated¡¨ Value at Risk (i.e. a measure that considers the overall value at risk of the bank after diversification across risk types). On the other hand, the aim of using capital more efficiently through capital allocation cannot be achieved only through a sort of centralized asset allocation process, but rather by designing a Value at Risk limit system and a risk-adjusted performance measurement system that are designed to provide the right incentives to individual business units. This connection between sophisticated and cutting edge risk measurement techniques and practical bank decision making about capital management and capital allocation make this book unique and provide readers with a depth of academic and theoretical expertise combined with practical and real-world understanding of bank structure, organizational constraints, and dec...

A large amount of natural or artificially produced physical phenomena are exploited for practical applications, even though several of them give rise to unpleasant consequences. These ultimately manifest themselves under form of malfunction or definitive failure of components and systems, or environmental hazard. So far, manifold categories of inadvertent or deliberate sources have been discovered to simultaneously produce useful effects in some ways but adverse ones in others. In particular, responsible for the growing interest in the last decades for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) has b

Invasive Bladder Cancer draws on the expertise of an international community of experts in the area. It offers an updated, simple overview bridging the information coming from basic research to clinical practice, facilitated by most chapters having both a basic researcher and a clinician writing together. The book will be of particular interest to office urologists, and oncologists with a specialist interest in urology.

Contributing to the development and the enrichment of the European dimension in Engineering Education (EE), constituted the global goal of TREE. In other words to enhance the compatibility of the many diverse routes to the status of Professional Engineer which exist in Europe and, hence, to facilitate greater mobility of skilled personnel and integration of the various situations throughout Europe. The activity of the TN TREE, made up by some 110 higher education Institutions and Associations, has been developed along four main lines: A. the tuning line B. the education and research line C. the attractiveness of EE line D. the sustainability line This volume, accompanied by a CD Rom, presents the results of three years of works in the frame of the Thematic Network TREE which was activated and financed in the frame of the SOCRATES Programme in the period 2004-2007.

The existence, for every sub-Laplacian, of a homogeneous fundamental solution smooth out of the origin, plays a crucial role in the book. This makes it possible to develop an exhaustive Potential Theory, almost completely parallel to that of the classical Laplace operator. This book provides an extensive treatment of Potential Theory for sub-Laplacians on stratified Lie groups. In recent years, sub-Laplacian operators have received considerable attention due to their special role in the theory of linear second-order PDE's with semidefinite characteristic form. It also provides a largely self-contained presentation of stratified Lie groups, and of their Lie algebra of left-invariant vector fields. The presentation is accessible to graduate students and requires no specialized knowledge in algebra nor in differential geometry. It is thus addressed, besides PhD students, to junior and senior researchers in different areas such as: partial differential equations; geometric control theory; geometric measure theory and minimal surfaces in stratified Lie groups.

The present book is a collection of essays exploring some classical dimensions of mind both from the perspective of an empirically-informed philosophy and from the point of view of a philosophically-informed psychology. In the last three decades, the level of interaction between philosophy and psychology has increased dramatically. As a contribution to this trend, this book explores some areas in which this interaction has been very productive – or, at least, highly provocative. The interaction between philosophy and psychology can be of different kinds. For example, psychology can be the subject for philosophy of science. In such a case, the philosopher of science pursues the usual set of issues (explanation, reduction, etc.) within the special case of psychology. Or, philosophy can be the source of proposals for improving psychology. Vice versa, the findings of psychology can be used to criticize philosophical theories and suggest ways to resolve some traditional philosophical questions about the mind, such as the nature of mental representation, perception, emotion, memory, consciousness and free will. The chapters in this book reflect these different forms of interaction in an effort to clarify issues and debates concerning some traditional cognitive capacities. The result is a philosophically and scientifically up-to-date collection of "cartographies of the mind".
